LOOKING FOR ADVENTURE - APPLY TO JOIN AN EXPEDITION TO TIBET IN SUMMER 2003. YSES (Yorkshire Schools Exploring Society) are organising an expedition for young people who are
between 15 and 19 years of age and in full-time education. Contact them NOW and apply to join an expedition to Tibet with other young people from all over Yorkshire. The expedition will run in the school summer holidays between July and August and is recruiting expeditioners NOW.
The expedition will visit Nepal and Tibet. It will start
in Kathmandu and travel over the Himalayas into Tibet. Once in Tibet the group will carry out an acclimatisation trek in the mountains close to the Nepalese boarder before travelling by 4 wheel drive into a very remote area of western Tibet. In Tibet we will carry out two treks, the first will be around Lake Manosarvor at a height of
over 3000 meters. The second around Mount Kailash reaching altitudes in excess of 5000 metres. The expedition will visit some of the worlds most remote and beautiful mountains, we may also visit a Tibetan school and if time allows visit the Rongbuk Monastery near Everest Basecamp Accompanying the expeditioners are 6-8 leaders who come from a variety of backgrounds, eg doctors, nurses, mountain rescue experts. As a condition of being selected, the prospective expeditioners are asked to raise the
necessary funds - and this is part of the whole experience. Families are not expected to provide the funds, the students use their ingenuity to find ways of raising the money. We have a host of previously successful ideas, along with details of sponsoring organisations who can offer support. In spite of many of the students studying for GCSE and A Level exams they do not seem
to suffer any disadvantage by taking part in the training weekends. In fact last year six of the students who took part in the 2000 expedition to China whilst in year 12 of their studies gained 3 and 4 grade A's at A level! Following the expeditions many of the students get a taste for adventure and travel
independently to experience adventure holidays. This year a group of 5 previous expeditioners took part in an exciting trekking adventure holiday in Iceland and returned safely to tell the tale! It is also not unusual for the students to elect to take a year out before University to travel around the world. ANYONE INTERESTED IN FIND OUT MORE ABOUT YSES SHOULD VISIT THEIR
